My friend has three dogs, one of which is a chihuahua that they rescued from the pound a few months ago. The chihuahua was an old dog, partially deaf and blind. Two days ago, one of their other dogs got in a fight with the chihuahua and did a lot of damage, including pulling one eye completely out of the socket.

Instead of taking the dog to the vet to put it to sleep, her husband decided to shoot it (they live in town). He missed with the first shot, said the dog was so deaf and "stupid" that the dog thought that it was time to play when the first shot went off. The next shot got the dog and then he tossed the dog over the fence into a vacant lot behind their house.

My friend didn't think much of it. Honestly, I find it pretty disturbing. Am I wrong? No way I could shoot a dog, particularly with it wagging its tail thinking it is time to play. Guys may view this a little differently. Interested in your thoughts. thanks

Having to put down a sick or injured dog is just one of the things a man has to do sometimes. It's not pleasant but you do it. I will say though I'd not just toss it out. I'd at least dispose of the carcass in an appropriate manner.

He should have buried it. Other than that I see no problem with it given the current condition of the dog. Not sure how much vets are charging to put animals to sleep these days, but I'm sure it's a lot more than the cost of a bullet, or two, lol.

It's a dog. It is that guys property. If he wanted to kill it rather than pay money to keep it, good for him.

Wow. Just wow.

I asked how is that more humane than taking it to a vet.

The end result is the same, and both solutions cause no pain.

Because you pump your animal full of chemicals in a strange location all while confusing the hell out of the dog is somehow more humane?

I wouldn't shoot my dog because that's not the way I would want to do it, unless absolutely necessary, but don't I don't kid myself that he's just drifting off to sleep. I made that decision knowing full well that my choice killed my dog. I did it to stop the pain she had, because her life wasn't worth living anymore.

That's exactly what happens. You don't have to kid yourself.

How about people that follow the law. Firing a gun in city limits isn't legal. And this dipshit missed. He could have killed someone.

If not wanting any of that makes me a pansy, so be it.

The vet's office or your home shouldn't be a strange location for your pet.

And I'm not sure how you think you are confusing the hell out of the dog. But I'm sure you got your degree in veterinary medicine from a good school.

nope, the dog is drifting off to death.

death is the end result, not sleep.

death.

my only issue with the story is throwing it over the fence.
that little body will start to stink and draw other animals to it.
he should have shot then buried the dog.
i have NO issue with him shooting the dog instead of making a vet visit.

agree, whats the problem with shooting your dog to put it down? now, I dont know how you miss at point blank range... but I have zero problem with shooting a dog to put it down

I may be too sensitive about this because I saw a police officer shoot a dog (he had to, it had been dumped, was hurt, and was scared so it would try to bite anyone who approached). When he shot the dog, it whined and wagged its tail until it died. The officer was a good guy, he was upset he had to do it and I'm sure he was disturbed by me because I cried my eyes out.

most of the reactions in this thread have nothing to do with it being in or out of city limits

Animal cruelty. This person should not own dogs period. He shot a dog that was trying to play and threw it over a fence.
