Sure, but the opium poppy requires a good amount of time and process to get it into a form to get high on. Mushrooms you can pick and eat immediately to get their effects.

Why not? Unrefined opium certainly isn't the demon that refined heroin is.
I might actually draw the line at heroin - if morphine were legal, perhaps that would be good enough - either is brutal, but the heroin junkies always seem to not enjoy the habit - a true sickness. Many of the barbituates are.
Of course, the cocaine and meth addicts go the other way - they enjoy it too much, then it causes all sorts of health problems. They only want to stop because of the legal ramifications, it seems.
But, again, Darwin was no fool...
