The actual city of Los Angeles is a terrifying concrete hellhole. There are some extremely nice places to live in that area but they're suburbs; it isn't "big city" living the way living in NYC or SF would.

This is a dumb misconception. I'm guessing you've never been to LA?

There are shitty parts for sure, but West LA is absolutely awesome. Many of the extremely nice areas you mention lie within city limits.

Lots of nice places to live in LA city limits too. Bel Aire for example. Many others.

this...traffic is an absolute nightmare 24/7, the cost of living is completely out of control and salaries are NOT keeping pace. On the bright side, we've had no rain in more than 90 days and the smog layer is growing by the day.

I'm looking to move out here after the first of the year.

Have you ever actually been there? What city isn't full of concrete? Or did you just stay downtown and never leave?
