Burglary update - advice needed

Hey fellas - back in January, I posted about my house being broken into, a gun and some jewelry being stolen.
Well, I learned today they arrested three pieces of shite for my house and about 10 others. I knew they arrested these guys a while back, but apparently they broke into so many homes, they couldn't confess to all of them.
A month or so ago, the detective re-interviewed one of the frickers, and showed him pictures of my wife's jewelry and he said that the other two fricks had it and had stolen it from our house. He had no idea where it is now with one exception - he saw one of the fricks throw it into a canal. Did not say where or when.
So, these fricks live in a shitty place, with a canal right behind their apartment. I'm betting it's in there.
I have to get this ring back. It's a family heirloom that means a lot to my wife and that cannot be replaced. It's the only piece of jewelry we really care about (including engagement and wedding rings). Any suggestions?
I have access to a little no-power 10' flat I can float back there. Can I rent scuba gear and just go to town? (I've never dived, would I need to be certified to rent?) Y'all know of any schools or companies that might could do this, without spending a shitload of money? Anyone have any ideas? Is this the stupidest idea I've ever had? I know it's like looking for a needle in a haystack, but I gotta try.

You need a metal detector. Can those be rented?

I can't imagine trying to find a ring in an unknown section of a canal after 6 months have passed. Wow.

to find a 1/2" piece of metal sunk in marsh mud?
be better to get a wooden boat and a strong magnet on a pole, if they even threw it in there you're talking about a tiny chance you find this thing

seems like they would remember throwing it in there if it was.
I hate to be negative but that ring is gone

Id drag a powerful magnet on a rope first before getting into any scuba gear with a metal detector

Your first mistake is believing anything these crooks have to say. Throwing jewelry into a canal that could easily be sold on the street for cash? C'mon man...

They didn't throw it in a canal

To rent tanks/gear, yes need C card. To recovery dive for something so small in what I'm assuming is a low-viz scenario is tricky. This goes for other methods you might try as well, but you have to be careful not to bury it further, especially if the bottom is that mucky stuff where something heavy can sink down 2-3 feet. Low-viz takes a shite ton of patience and carefulness as well as tolerance for going by touch and having shadowy things looming around.
What kind of canal is it, especially if you can say it by name?

go round those frickers up and give them 12hrs to produce your shite or you shoot them and throw them in the canal.
Sounds reasonable right?
