90s movies had better special effects but although the decade had plenty of good movies it wasn't any better than the 80s overall. In certain areas 90s movies were better (particularly political thrillers), but the 80s had iconic sequels that were better (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Beverly Hills Cop, all the great horror sequels, etc.)

As for music and pop culture, the 90s was decent the first half of the decade but rapidly worsened throughout the decade. The series itself is very weak so far compared to the 80s series. They spent time on Friends but no mention of the greatest sitcom of the 90s and maybe all time (Seinfeld)?

Opposite for me. Early 90s music and TV was just a continuation of late 80s which wasn't awesome. This is a time when Steve Urkel was considered funny and the music ranged from hair band leftovers to nails-on-chalkboard crap like Bel Biv Devoe.

I'm focusing more on the musical side of things. There was a pretty sharp cutoff point around 1994 when the video music era ended and the Real World and god awful "reality" TV exploded on the scene. The music industry was still interested in signing and promoting artists that could play instruments and write and sing intelligible lyrics. Even rap and hip hop was still actually pretty good then. It's all gone to h### since MTV quit showing videos.

As for Steve Urkel, didn't watch that show. As for late 80s "hair" bands, far too much is made of their influence by those who knock the 80s. Most of the crap you see from documentaries about "hair metal" never saw mainstream radio. The early 90s had some pretty good pop music too.

This NatGeo special has been phenomenal so far. As was the 80s one before it. I'm glued to the TV for the 2 straight hours.

I agree it sucked when MTV quit music but for my tastes post-1994 music was better. Although pre1994 had great albums by Pearl Jam etc. I guess I hated early 90s pop most of all.

The reason I'm so down on late 90s music is that it to me was when music fell off a cliff. This may sound hyperbolic and overly dramatic but I struggle to come up with more than a dozen or so pop songs that have come out from the late 90s on that I like. Mainstream music has literally been THAT bad in the last several years and it started going down in the late 90s.

No, just that it wasn't a great decade for movies like the 50s,70s & 90s.

The 80's had legendary movies. The 90's is a great decade for movies as well.
