My catahoula is the same way. I have to pen him up. He broke out a few years ago while we were gone to a firework show and stayed gone two days

Had a dog when I was a kid that would try to catch them. The lab I have now always want to be right beside them when they shoot off. He is terrified of thunder and rain though.
