4 yards saved us 5 million

quote:

“I conclude that Mr. Graham was at the position of tight end for purposes of Article 10, Section 2(a)(i) when, at the snap, he was aligned adjacent to or ‘arm’s-length’ from the nearest offensive lineman and also when he was in the slot, at least if such alignment brought him within four yards of such linemen,” Burbank wrote in the 14-page, single-spaced decision obtained by PFT. Because Graham lined up in either of those two ways more than half the time in 2013, Burbank concluded that Graham is a tight end for purposes of the franchise tag.

It's about time this was cleared up. On the one hand, you can't really blame Jimmy for trying, especially if he's lined up as a receiver a good part of the time. The NFL is a tough business to stay in, and a guy's career can be ended by injury at any moment. I can see how Jimmy wants to make sure that he's set for life. But on the other hand, the guy is a tight end, period. He's always been a tight end. So I think everything played out how it's supposed to. Jimmy will still get paid very nicely, and should be set for life with this contract coming up.

I'll say this for the third time. JG did not ever want to be a WR.

This has been, as has been stated ad nauseum, a contract ploy and it seems also a wish from the NFLPA to get this more clear going into the future for all sides.
JG career could end any day. He should get one large payday. It could be his last. You don't hand money back to your boss on your first big contract. I'm sure all you guys would but I understand trying to get the best deal you can while you can.
For the life of me I will never get the amount of JG hate the last few months.
A bunch of Nancies.

The saints offered to make him the highest paid TE in the game. I think that's more than fair. But no, let's do some revisionists history to try to squeak out some more.

I don't hate the guy, but I thought it was silly. And the rearranging the FO would have to do if Jimmy had won would have been a headache.

Brees refused to sit with the FO who was ready to do the long term deal. Brees refused. It ramped up pressure and fan hysteria (see around here at the time).
His group did that to squeeze more money from the team.
If the leader of the team does it then what does that say to the rest?

First off, that's Drew. I love Jimmy, but he isn't on that level. Secondly, he didn't try to convince the league that he was actually the commissioner.

lol @ comparing brees to graham

the man has been severely underpaid for what he was putting up for 6 years as a guy on a second contract. he was not some rookie starting out with the saints. he, along with payton, changed the entire franchise forever and won a freaking superbowl.

graham with the saints for 4 years and offered the highest amount of money at his position.. you would think that would be outstanding enough.. especially for a guy who said he only wanted to play for brees his whole career.

He lead a superbowl and shattered numerous historical records for 6 years. In 2009 he was perfect that entire post-season run with no interceptions even. He showed up and showed out big. It's still silly to compare the two positions and contracts and who should do what.. but hey maybe you are right. Everyone should just hold out if their leader did it. Regardless of circumstance.

Uh, he is greedy but I don't think anyone was jumping off the bandwagon. Sproles played a pass catching role more than runner role but I didn't see anything about him wanting to be paid as if he were another position

Agreed, plus Drew was already considered a future HOFer at the time of his contract. That's what got me about the other qbs that have recently signed larger contracts, Not even established yet to deserve it

Graham needs to thank his lucky stars he went to the Saints in the first place who utilized him in a way no other franchise would have. Payton and Brees did more for Graham and he better be thankful for that or he can go somewhere else and not put up close to what he's doing in NO.

Yep Graham had nothing to do with his success, every Saints tight end before him has put up numbers the same way he has

People don't understand the word.

And this is a labor issue just as much as it's a contract issue. All other TE contracts will be based off of this, so while as a fan, I might want him just to sign the initial contract offered to him, other players have a vested interest in it's outcome. Jimmy is at the top of his position, which makes it even more important.

People have this mindset that if they were world class athletes they would give their favorite team the benefit of the doubt and a dicount...that's not how the world works

I'm fine with making Jimmy the highest paid TE in the game. But the very act of trying to take more money is selfish. Ultimately we weren't going to use the money saved on anyone that would help us win a title, but it's all on principle. Any player who would gripe this much over money doesn't love the game and they don't care about winning. That isn't the type of player I support.

So fricking what? They have a really short window to make all the money they can.
