If you have the ball back in your stance it could cause more spin which could "balloon" the ball. Just depends on the club head at impact

This is my problem when I'm trying to hit a knockdown shot. So I just hit a normal shot and club up. Screw the wind.

OP should hit the range and work on hitting a jumbo bucket of 3/4 swings and work though it.

And obligatory, get a lesson or two.

Go to the range, video yourself, report back.

do you have trouble hitting a punch shot (lower trajectory, not a full swing) or simply swinging a bit slower? ... sounds like you're talking about hitting a punch shot ...

I punch a hybrid...almost like a putter stroke, if I have to stay low under tree limbs. But if the terrain is bad and I need to get the ball in the air I need a soft 8 iron that won't fly over the green. When I soften up it's usually bad.

they all seem to be giving you advice on hitting a punch shot ... if you need to throttle down a bit, for whatever reason - to 'baby' a 7 instead of an 8 - try making a slightly (and i do mean slightly) slower back swing ... then you may not feel as rushed coming down ... shortening the swing rarely works for me when i'm trying to simply swing a bit slower ...

I sometimes have issues with my half shots and touch around the greens. Here's a drill I do to help: Tee your ball about 2 inches on the tee box. Address your ball with 3-4 baby waggles to get comfortable. Take a smooth backswing and then smash the fricking shite out of the ball. Drink some beer. Laugh at your playing partners being 28 yards behind your monster drive. Skull it around for bogie. Drink some beer. Repeat

Take a longer club, choke down let the butt of the club lead the blade. Never allow the blade to pass the butt of the club.
