It was definitely NOT "awesome".

I watched the entire series on dvd.

Got tired of it midway through ,but stuck it out and watched it to the end.

Was definitely not "overly impressed" like some of you appear to be.

It was better than the Pacific one, though.

i wonder if I should try to watch it soon

You should; it's great. It's great on its own, but even moreso if you like history (especially WWII).

My 90 year old grandfather has been visiting this month and has been telling stories about his experience in WW2 so I have been on a kick lately.

Thanks everyone for suggestions. I will go with The Pacific first it seems.

Do you not like war movies? Do you not like WWII?

That's the only thing I can think of that would make you say that it was not an "overly impressive" show.

It was better written, acted, directed, edited, shot, and produced than 99.9% of TV or movies ever made. I'm typically one to shy away from heaping praise to over-hype a film or show, but I honestly don't know that I can do so in this instance. Band of Brothers is at or near the pinnacle of achievement in motion pictures. I can think of only a very small handful of films and TV shows that can match it, including the great films of all time like the Godfather, the Searchers, and Schindler's List.

I believe Breaking Bad is one of the best shows ever created and Band of Brothers is vastly, VASTLY superior.

They are two different media insofar as one is a serial drama and the other is a mini-series, so it is not a direct apples-to-apples comparison, but the only thing I can think of that explains why you did not think Band of Brothers was great is that you are German born from a Nazi SS Officer and you hate all American WWII movies or you don't like war movies in general.

I read Eugene Sledge's book first, and that made the Pacific more enjoyable. Unfortunately, the Sledge story isn't introduced until several episodes into the series.
I thought Letters from Iwo Jima was a fantastic movie. It's unusual because it is shot from the Japanese perspective. Check it out.

Suggestion: While your grandfather is there and in a talkative mood, set up a video camera and film him talking about his experiences. I promise you it will be one of the best things you ever do.
I audio recorded my grandfather in 1981 discussing his roll in the war. He died shortly after.
I filmed my wife's grandfather in 2002 talking about his roll in the Battle of the Bulge. He passed away a few years ago.
Both of those are priceless!

Good idea. I took him last week to WW2 museum in New Orleans and got him a private tour of the PT Boat they are recreating (He was on a PT Boat in Normandy). So he has been in a talkative mood the past week or so.

It is crazy, he never talked about it when I was growing up but the past 2-3 years he has opened up alot and shared his experiences. He is still pretty sharp about everything and remembers names and everything.

Of course I took him to dinner last night and he forgot what he ordered by the time waitress brought it to him. But his long term memory is top notch.

I would love to hang with your grandfather and listen to his stories and memories for an afternoon. Consider yourself lucky, and filming it is a great idea...I'd have never thought about that.

He is something else. I posted this in the Vet thread on OT last week but figured I would share it here too since he gave me this picture last week.

He is the one near the white smudge mark behind the guy with hat bill flipped up. He has probably told me 6 times this week that that guy was a slob and one of my grandfathers job was to keep the boat tidy and they would always get into fist fights.

I interviewed my moms dad about his service when I was in sixth or seventh grade and recorded it all on cassette. Unfortunately we have been unable to find the tapes. My mom doesn't throw anything away, but we don't even know if we still have them somewhere.

BoB does have some traits that may turn off some. Some detractors will cite the lack of humanity and distinguished differences with some of the characters. There are also some typical war cliches and loose storytelling... I overlook them due to sheer entertainment value.

Personally, I consider it to be one of the most entertaining pieces of film/TV I've seen, but I can see some off-putting qualities as well.

I could not disagree more.

This might be the most-ridiculous thing I have ever read on this board.

But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Maybe to you, but you might be the only person who disagrees with it though. I watched BB near the end of last year, and I fricking loved it. And it's not as good as BoB to me.

But it really is an apples to oranges comparison though.

The Pacific is great on it's own but BoB makes it seem shitty because the source material (European front, following one outfit, the book it was based on) is plainly far superior. It's just not fair..so stop it.

Agree with the advice to watch the Pacific first, and Taxman's comments above are also spot on. The setting is something that made the Pacific less...well, romantic, for lack of a better word. Unlike the European theatre of operations, the Pacific theatre was just ugly. Those men fought and died under brutal conditions against a very different foe on little islands that most people had never heard of. The show does a good job of telling that story, but it is story that is tougher to watch.

Definitely. Also into genealogy, so this is a great thing to do with your grandparents regardless of whether or not they served.

My wife's grandfather was interviewed by the folks with Stephen Ambrose in New Orleans and we have copies. It was after Band of Brothers, I think is was actually for the WWII museum. We also have an interview with her grandmother who came here from Italy to get out from under Mussolini and the fascist regime.

Band of Brothers is infinitely better. So if you're going to watch both, watching The Pacific first is great advice.

Actually I would say this would win top billing:

Slight edge to BoB.

You're literally the first and only person I've ever heard (in person and on a message board) say that Band of Brothers wasn't great.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but saying Band of Brothers wasn't great is completely asinine.
