I follow soccer during the MLS season as I have a friend who plays for the Chicago Fire. During the World Cup something has me asking this question.
Is it called a game or a match? I have always called it a soccer match, but I hear more announcers calling it a game.
Which is it? TIA for responses

I don't think it matters, but for soccer I say match.

It's either. Usually if the word soccer or futbol is used before it, they say match.
'This is a great soccer match.'
'This is a great game.'
'They have some big upcoming fixtures.'

Game = soccer itself
Match = past or present game
Fixture = future game
That's what I feel like the general rule is for the Brits.

A fixture is a match on the schedule, usually in league play.
You have a "tie" in a cup competition.
