My hot shot driver charges flat rate $3.10/mile from the time he leaves my shop until the destination.

A guy that used to work with me actually bought a Ram 3500 and 36ft gooseneck. He quit our company and went in as owner-operator with an established company. That was great because they already have the book of business, so the only overhead he pays is fuel/maintenace and his truck note.

He made around 15k the first month, but that was stretching all the way out to North Dakota, Wyoming, etc. Subtract fuel and other expenses and that number obviously drops a little.

Id make overnight hauls but with 2 young kids and a needy wife it wouldnt work out being on the road 24/7

We have a Hot Shot that delivers to us occasionally when I need some material to be available in the middle of the night or on the weekends

Never thought about them being an independent contractor

We used some good guys when I was at fire tech. My boss, at the time, was real close to getting in to that business but when the owner of fire tech wouldn't let him use the gooseneck, he backed out

I did it part time in younger days.....

If your truck is not leased to a big carrier like acme...it is somewhat regulated.

You can make some money...

You can also get stuck in some bizarre places waiting to be unloaded
