I been away for three years and plan to return back to Louisiana after I finish my doctorate which will be three years from now. Do any of the major city areas have a bright future ahead?

Specifically Mandeville or Madisonville.

Lake Providence in third place.

Ferriday is the city of choice...

Age, work, family, etc should all play a decision. What might be right for a mid 20's single guy might not be right for a mid 30's family man with 3 kids...

It all depends on what you like.
Lafayette is my favorite city to live in. New Orleans is a close second.
If you want a more suburban feel, I'd go with Mandeville or Covington. If smaller towns are your thing, St. Francisville, Thibodaux, and Gonzales may be enjoyable. It all depends on what you want out of life.

Do you want a fast-paced urban lifestyle where you can slay lots of chicks and get hammered every night?

Do you want rural living close to prime hunting and fishing spots?

Are you looking for good schools for kids?

Do you want the conveniences of a large city, but less traffic and aren't looking to pick up chicks?

-Uptown, Mid-City, Lakeview/Lake Vista/Lakefront, Old Metry, and certain parts of Metairie
-Madisonville and Mandeville
-Lafayette

Some BR peeps will come in here and say Prairieville and Gonzales.
