I believe that in less than 5 years we will be able to carry concealed without a permit.

There was constitutional carry before the state congress this year. It didn't pass.

But you're probably right.

So my dad is trying to do the online thing right now, when does he pay the $500? After his fingerprints get approved?

I live in Virginia and this is one of the FEW things I like about this state. Took a VSP approved online course for $19.95...easy 25 question test. Printed the certificate out and took it to the Chesterfield County Courthouse the same day. The fee was $50 if I remember correctly? I had the permit in a few weeks and it is good for 5 years. I still HATE living up here, though. LINK

10-4, he filled everything out and it just said to get your fingerprints done within 60 days.

I submitted online and mailed in my digital prints in early July. Was emailed that I was approved, and paid online July 7. Haven't received anything yet, though.

I don't know if you're part of the LA CHP Instructor group on Facebook, but instructors there have reported students getting their permits in as little as two weeks with the new system. It is VERY fast.

I also hope you are making it out to the event on August 16. If you want the details let me know.

Mines still pending online, I have to go get court documents for a 22 year old dwi conviction and copy of divorce paperwork from the courthouse Monday. I drove to lsphq in BR last week for fingerprints and ID.

The divorce will probably be more of a holdup than the dui.

Which is total crap IMO. A divorce has nothing to do with your instinct to self preservation.

That's why I like living in Georgia, although I don't know what the timeline will be when I get mine renewed in two years now that they've added a photo to the GWL.

When I got mine here the timeline was:

Day 1:

10:15AM Go to courthouse, fill out paperwork, pay fee ($75 or something like that).

10:30AM Go to Sheriff's Department for fingerprints.

10:45AM Go home

Day 4:

5:20PM Arrive home from work to find Georgia Weapons License in my mailbox.

The wait does vary by county here, though. If you're in the Atlanta area it takes longer due to higher numbers to process and bureaucratic foot-dragging. Fortunately, I live in a more rural area where it's just an accepted (and encouraged) fact of life that everyone is armed.

ETA: No classes required and when buying a firearm in GA, if you have a GWL, you only have to fill out the 4473...they don't actually run another background check, because they figure it's a waste of resources to run one on someone who has obviously already had one run.

lamest part of this is the fact that we remarried 2 years later.

ETA lamest that it will hold it up not that I remarried.

Wtf?

You have to submit divorce paperwork ( in my case 25 years ago)?

This is a BS process, to be honest. We are a shall issue state, but clearly, we've allowed a lot of crap to be added.

Someone told me they wanted divorce records to check for any history violence or acting out reported during the divorce that never brought formal charges or been reported during the marriage. I have no clue if that is right or not and if so it's BS because most of the time stuff like that is nothing more than a pissed off ex-wife running her mouth.
I want to say, all I had to send in was a copy of my final judgement and it didn't even have to be certified like my DUI records.

What's total crap is the fact we even have to be licensed. It's a joke to justify it being needed when only good law abiding citizens would spend the time and money to be licensed in the first place. What do they think a criminal is going to do, take the class and fool with the fingerprints and crap, send them money and wait a month to go rob a store with a gun or shoot someone.
I firmly believe the only reason we have to take a course and have background checks done is so they don't give a license to a violent criminal. They know good and well it won't stop a criminal without one from concealing a weapon.
I hope you're right KR and that it goes away soon, but I think it is brought before the house for feel good legislation from pro-gun districts and they will never give up that easy money they are making on it.
