Taxi companies need to adapt and come out with a functioning app that rivals Uber or surpasses it. Until then Uber will reign.

i take it you did not see the hearing yesterday

the cab services were angry that they didn't have an app, and they wanted the city council to make them a fricking app

It also perfectly frames the anti-uber side, sheer laziness and complacency in reaction to changing demand.

you obviously didn't watch the hearings, either

as one cab company owner put it (and i'll paraphrase), "grandma don't even have an ap"

the most important things i learned are

1. apparently after giving your name, when addressing teh council, you have to give your address

2. you should bring 3-4 friends along, have them fill out cards, and then use their time to go longer than anyone else

Boo fricking hoo.

What about all the good hard working american factory workers that lost their jobs because companies found more efficient, cheaper labor overseas?

You can't help but be biased. How can you favor the idea but not Uber itself?

Speaking from the broke college student pov here, this would revolutionize night life in Baton Rouge. I can't tell you how many friends of had drive home drunk because they get tired of sitting on a curb outside a bar at 3 in the morning.
Also this would be an easy, convenient job for anyone, like student with good records, to have an easy profitable side job

What's not to like?

The only problem on the student side is I think Uber drives need to have their insurance in their own name. I am not 100% on how that works. Regardless you could make a weeks pay on Thursday night, cottages to bogies and back 10-3.

4. uber is (or will be) racist - it won't service the hood and/or poor people can't afford it

Taxis already do this.

As for consumer safety, just have Uber drivers register.

A lot of cab companies are, at the end of the day, out of state.

I think the only legit argument is the economic one. However, Uber is NOT always cheaper than a cab, so that argument falls on its face.

Cab drivers should be upset with their companies, not with Uber.

Uber SUVs are almost always more expensive than the taxi equivalent.

It blows my mind that an enterprising cab company hasn't done this. There are probably plenty of unemployed CS graduates who would do it for next to nothing.

The people who own/run those companies don't want to spend any money. That's what it boils down to. Cabbies need to be pissed at the companies for whom they work--companies who take a good chunk out of each of their fares and give them little, if anything, in return.

At least with Uber they have more say. Cabbies should welcome Uber and leave their oppresive cab companies.

no it's not

and it will create a "technology tax" (or gap, if you want to go all dr. strangelove) for those who are not capable of using the tech, but that is a private issue that should be out of the public sphere.

well it was the owners bitching yesterday

the most telling was the limo guys bitching about Uber-black, because Uber-black wants to bust their $75 (i believe) min rate for rides (that is legislative in nature, iirc). THAT was a cartel bitching about competition via lower prices

I think the cabbies are terrified of the rating system that comes along with Uber.

People won't be required to use Uber, and traditional taxis would still exist for people to use them, whether by choice or necessity.
