Southwest Airlines question

I have a flight tomorrow morning at 8:15 and just did the 24 hour checkin. I checked in at literally the second it turned 8:15, and I saw that I was #50 in boarding group A. Not complaining, but how in the world am I #50? I understand some people have status or whatever, but where are the others from?

Prediction how this thread will go.
You're trashy for trying to save money on a 2 hour flight and all that nonsense.

Early bird check-in baw! Cough up the extra $20 or you'll be stuck in the back end of 'A', at best.

ahh, makes sense. I didn't think of that.
As long as I'm in 'A', I'm good

Business select gets a1-15, but i wonder if more than 15 are on that
i've gotten window seats in "B" before without issue, but in "A" you should be good

People pay for the automatic check in for like $12 per seat.
ETA - if your by yourself, it really doesn't matter. If you have kids, it doesn't matter because you can board at the end of A.

I don't know why, but the "baw" makes me laugh every time. Keep it up, everyone.

I believe its random. You might be behind some pre-flight boarders (old people, disabled, travelers with infants), but I've never found any rationale behind your boarding assignment and when you actually check in. Thus I think its random.

Early bird check-in eats up most of group A.

I have. I've checked in quite a few people before that all had different conf #s for the same flight and the ones I checked in last had later boarding groups.

Southwest used to board people in the order that they checked in at the gate starting two hours before flight time. I haven't flown SW for a while so don't know if they still do that.

I don't mind sitting near or behind the wing on southwest unless I see alot of unruly kids waiting to board...then a front seat is beneficial. BUT, I love boarding a full plane at the end of A and grabbing the middle seat on the front row when most of the plane is still empty.
The plane is going to be full anyway, I just love seeing their faces.

Southwest is my preferred airline out of Denver.
If you are B30 or earlier, you will definitely get a window or aisle seat if traveling alone. I've never had an issue with getting window and middle or window and aisle on an emptier flight being around B30.
Early bird check-ins usually take up most of A, typically to 35-50. It's going to get to the point where so many people are paying EBChecking that Southwest will have to rework the system. Probably charge more for the EBCheckin.

What happens if the majority of the flight pays for early bird? I'd be pisses if I did early bird and still received a B or C

No doubt tiers of early bird are coming

The first 25 sports are reserved for business select.

Just steal a wheelchair when you get to the airport and they will board you first

AirTran > Southwest IMO, and yes I know they are owned by southwest. The assigned seating makes boarding so much quicker and people cant seat the airplane in the most efficient way possible.
Also early bird check in on SW/airtran my seat was assigned toward the front on a connecting flight. Not sure if that was on purpose because my flight was connecting or early bird, but I didn't have to fight through all the selfish assholes getting off the plane that didn't need to immediately get up so i can catch my connecting flight.
