It appears to me they wanted him to have 3 years of medical insurance coverage which he probably very much needs with all the medicine he's taking for his Parkinson's.

This, plus Kragthorpe can still make some off-the-field contributions during that time and probably will want to just to stay involved. Sounds like a good deal for all concerned.
