I have recently, in the past few years, decided to start learning about the sport. My attempts at watching it cold turkey a couple of years ago were met with extreme confusion. So I've attempted to learn the rules, understand how the game is played, and it has increased my enjoyment of the sport tenfold. I don't know everything, and I still have a lot of questions, but what I've discovered is a game where there are a ton of strategic positioning, defenses, and ebb and flow to set up opportunities for scoring. It can be very exciting, especially for a new fan.

So a word of advice to long time soccer fans: When a new soccer fan, or someone gaining interest because of the World Cup, comes along and gets excited about it, don't be an a-hole about it. If they have questions on how the game works, answer them. Encourage their understanding. I've seen for years soccer fans bitch about the lack of exposure of the sport in America, and when it finally starts to get there, they turn around and act all smug because people are excited about it. My Facebook news feed is littered with "where were all you people when we were excited about soccer years ago?" posts. I was sitting at the bar in Chilis the other day at lunch conversing with another guy about the game on when we were told by another gentlemen very condescendingly "I bet you two have never seen a match before today."

Just saying, folks.

Starting a thread with that title on a soccer-specific board is pretty jerkish.

I think it's a mixture of having to put up with the same old redneck jokes time and time again and also dealing with the same questions every four years.

US soccer fans are very guarded.

I also think that there are some (just as in everything else) that think they're superior because they watch the EPL on a regular basis. They are sort of hipsters of US sports.

Who cares though. Just enjoy the game.

Newb questions.... are actually ok. just don't ask them while I'm glued to the TV watching the USA. Wait till we're done and I'll be glad to explain offsides, stoppage time, why Cruyff is better than Pele, the MLS, Relegation and Promotion, CONCACAF and why Alexi Lalas is a tool.

I agree with you.

But we also live in the biggest bullshitter country in the world.

Dude watches one game and becomes an expert.

Some dude I work with was telling me how much we were going to miss Altidore's presence in the midfield like he was a damn expert. I was too embarassed to say anything.

Part of the issue is these new fans talk like they have any idea what they're talking about. I'm listening to too coworkers right now talk about how that CR pass should have been super easy to clear, and how there has been little scoring this year.

ETA: My issue with them is they try to tell me that I don't know what I'm seeing. Not that they are watching and talking.

It's fine to ask questions and get interested but when people come in and say things like Bradley sucks and we try to tell said person that Bradley does indeed not suck and they fight us on the issue then I'm not just gonna let it go cause someone is new to the game.

I'm plenty nice to new fans. I'm not going to suck someone's dick who keeps coming on here with stupid arse suggestions to change the game. Herp derp make the goal bigger. Herp derp get rid of offside. frick you, learn the rules.

Because for every person who genuinely wants to know about soccer, theres about 10 that think it's for "grass fairies" and "gay boys". Years and years of being on the defensive makes you naturally defensive.

The questions aren't honestly interrogative. It's almost rhetorical like, "wait you can have a tie"? Or, "why isn't there video evidence" and for god sakes.... the diving (simulation) issue.

We know it's a problem.

People need to be more polite when asking about a new sport.

in addition to everything that has been said so far on why some new fans are annoying as shite, ill add the "who is this bradley guy and why is he on the field?" and the "this bradley guy is supposed to be good?" shite.

This person is an a-hole who just so happens to be a soccer fan. Please don't group us in with these types.

If you look at how most people new to this board are received, people who genuinely want to learn rather than troll, they are very well received. I don't know any other board that's as welcoming, to be honest. We're pretty harsh towards trolls though.

Why are you friends with so many assholes? I haven't seen this from any of my soccer-loving facebook peeps.

I've found that most U.S. soccer fans have this elitist mentality. I think that is just as much of a hindrance to the sport growing as the more popular sports.

yeah i agree. i start analyzing the game and say the two goals were cameron's fault. which they were anyone could see that. and some soccer snob fans start berating me saying i cannot analyze soccer and that they've been watching for so and so long. i really dont care. i have two eyes and i know the basics. that's all i need.

As a soccer noob who would love to pick an MLS team or something to follow and learn the sport, I love this post. It's difficult to understand for me. It'd be like trying to understand a cricket match for most of you and being told how fricking dumb you are for even asking such an elementary question by half the people you're watching with while they laugh and clink their ghey little teacups together in celebration (if you make fun of or are mean to me it makes you a 65 year old flamboyantly gay man in my mind)
