Huge difference from Vietnam.
Wrong.
In Vietnam we were the second act in a two act play. The French fulfilled all that you mentioned in the preceding years. In this instance, we are the main character in both acts of this play.

Bump, to contrast changes in the last 3 months.

Partisan hats off.
Sorry. No can do.
Obama is doing this only because the polls tell him he has to do something. If there wasn't an election coming up, and the polls were sweet, we'd be bugging out of Iraq quicker than you could say "Benghazi."

The rise of AQ/ISIL-like organizations will occur from time to time forever more. This sort of thing is never going away.
The USA must accept that we are going to have to send military forces into that region from time to time to kill a bunch of terrorists. This is never going to end. IMHO, we might as well call it "The Forever War."
POTUS's political party membership matters not. The fact that we are fighting The Forever War is completely separate.
That said, destroying ISIL and stabilizing Iraq is a good idea for the foreseeable future.
If Iraq can't be stabilized, perhaps implement the 3 state solution.
The USA engineered the resignation of the Iraqi Prime Minister recently. Perhaps a new PM can stabilize and unite Iraq's three tribes. THIS development is new. When this thread began, Maliki was still the PM.
We have to keep our fingers crossed and hope that the new Iraqi PM can work some magic.

I also believe this to be true.

"300" you put the wrong things in parenthesis.

I thought we were going to add to this number? Regardless of the number, there will be casualties inflicted by the troops they are training.

I saw this thread and thought "Hey, what a great idea - I'm going to share my views on this...Oh wait I started this thread..."
A couple of things are different though: They've started beheading people. And they (according to U.S. gov - take with grain of salt) are a direct threat to U.S. national security so ...it is different story. This thread was originally in the context of Iraqi safety....not us. Screw them.
If we truly can keep our involvement limited, I think it's a good idea. Of course, that's a very difficult thing to do...so.... I'm glad I don't have to make the decision.

I know why he calls them advisors, and I don't like it. It's to appease people like me who voted for him because of his stance against the war.
We're not that dumb Mr. President.

No need to worry. Americans are greeted as "liberators"

Well now the MIC really knows how to start wars.
When people actually consider joining with Iran you know the ME as really become a CF.
We all say we wish the ME would handle their own but then we end up sending in troops or planes and they do nothing once again.
Time for tough love. Let them face their own people and their own beliefs and see what that gets them.
Won't happen though I'm sure.

I would like to see this happen. It would push people in this region to finally "drop their dime" on what they really believe and are willing to do. Most just sit it out.

I thought the whole point of this mission was to degrade the capability of ISIS to cause trouble not only in the ME, but more importantly in the US.
This has all the feeling of the 1990s and Afghanistan.
The problem with ISIS is that they have a whole lot of more money than AQ did. And they're getting "home grown" terrorists who will be ready to return and pass as average Americans until they decide to blow themselves and a couple of thousand people up.
I think we have to make it as unattractive as possible for ISIS to recruit Westerners, and I don't see how you do it without inflicting major damage on them. And I don't see how you do that with just air strikes.

But we already knew they were doing this. They just weren't showing it in hi def, slickly produced, choreographed videos.
The visualization is the only change.
Same thing happened in the Ray Rice fiasco BTW.

I imagine we've had "advisers" in Iraq for a loooong time. Not shocking or unexpected.
