Marines on amphibs train extensively on reenforcing embasseys under siege and rescuing Americans in war torn countries. If things continue going south in Iraq don't be surprised to see these guy go ashore.

The ship’s presence in the region “provides the commander-in-chief additional options to protect American citizens and interests in Iraq, should he choose to use them.” Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a statement.

If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven's scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines.

There's nothing more effective than a Marine when there's someone in the Navy to tell him what to do.

They are only there to perform evacuation efforts POTUS has no stomach for armed conflict in Iraq.

I wish them the best.
Marines are great beach heads.
Small units, move quick, and get in and out quick.
Just bad when we let our enemy know we are coming not the best situation for those women and men.

One thing I can say with absolute certainty -
NO MATTER WHAT OBAMA DOES - THE RIGHT WING WILL OPPOSE IT.
If he does nothing - they will oppose him for allowing an ally to fall to vicious terrorist thugs.
If he invades the country and stabilizes it - they will oppose him for putting troops in harms way for a hopeless cause.
If he does anything in between - they will oppose that as well. If he asks Congress for air strikes - they will oppose it and vote it down just to be against him. If he uses air strikes without asking Congress - they will oppose that as unconstitutional (even though they haven't tried to repeal the war powers act). If he sends a team of Navy SEALS in to find the leader of ISIS and the SEALS blow his brains to bits - they will oppose that as in-humanitarian and cruel because he didn't get a trial.
If Americans citizens turn out to be members of ISIS - the Republican party will critisize him for using drones to kill them - unless he doesn't - then they will critisize him for allowing terrorists to run freely simply because they are a bunch of anchor babies.
THIS IS A FACT

Iraq and Syria are super stable, so 275 extra troops should be plenty.
