Ah yes, the glorious year of 1977, a favorite of discerning Dead Heads for three decades now! For the second volume in our new Road Trips series, we’ve chosen another tour that was not tapped previously through Dick’s Picks—a blazing swing through the Southwest, Colorado and down to Louisiana during the first weeks of October 1977.
This was a great time for the band: Both the years-in-the-making Grateful Dead Movie and the new Terrapin Station album had come out a few months earlier and the group was riding high on momentum from both of those projects. There was exciting new material that had debuted at the beginning of the year, including “Estimated Prophet,” “Terrapin” and “Fire on the Mountain,” and steady touring through the spring allowed the band to really explore the nuances of the new repertoire, while they also continued to hone the material that had come in following the band’s return to the stage in mid-1976 after their hiatus. What you’ll find on these great-sounding discs is a mixture of old favorites played with that fabled ’77 energy, and more recent material that was hitting new peaks nightly. There’s a “Let It Grow” that will knock your tie-dyed socks off, one of the great versions of “Sugaree” of that or any year, the famous “Help on the Way > Slipknot! > Franklin’s Tower” from Norman, Oklahoma, epic workouts on “Playing in the Band” and “The Other One” and a jammed-out “Black Peter” for the ages. Hot stuff!

'77<<<<<<<<<<<'90

the donna/keith era gets alot of shite (and sometimes, deservedly so), but the best shows of that period remain my most-listened to. can't put my finger on it, but it's like the band has more kick in its step.

a later show worth hearing (IMO) is sandstone ampitheatre, 6-24-91. jerry seems more inspired than usual in hornsby's presence, and he scorches his leads in "goin' down the road feelin' bad"...the two of 'em were definitely feeling it that night. the lone hiccup is "good lovin'", and even that's worth a listen. someone told me bobby was getting a little butthurt over too many jerry (or, jerry on vox) songs in a row, so he launched into "lovin'" right after GDTRFB....jerry wasn't happy about it, and supposedly he took a smoke break until it was time for him to play the solo

I like 1990, but ill have what you're smoking. I like 88 better than 90, tight concise jams.

For me....'68-71 > '88-'90 > '77 run.....mainly because of the countless tunes/jams ruined by Donna Jean's yodeling/howling or whatever the hell it is.

I've been to +/- 75 shows from '87-'95.

Dave LeMeiux (Dave's Picks) recommends listening to the May '77 six show run in sequence as they progress in energy from night to night, ending in a very long and fantastic show in Tuscaloosa, AL.

10-14-83 Hartford

This show is famous for Trey Anastasio attending and having an epiphany

i don't get the extreme love for this show (hartford '83). it's got some good highlights, yes, but i find myself skipping many songs 'cuz they just sound too clunky IMO.

of course, actually being there (like trey was) is much different than just hearing it after the fact...

Kind of off topic, but I have really been enjoying the Joe Russo's Almost Dead stuff they have been playing on Jam On. I think they have only played a handful of shows, hoping they put a tour together sooner than later.

Yes! Their 12.27.13 Capitol Theater show has been heavily played over here the past few months. I was so impressed that I had planned on going to catch one of their shows in Colorado in October but I think I am going to instead catch them at Hulaween in FL. I really hope they stop in NOLA before or after Hulaween. The Joy Theater would be perfect.

eta: I'm sure most people are familiar with Bustle in Your Hedgerow, which is the parent band to Almost Dead. Here is a cool show they did last year where the played one set of Black Sabbath and one set of random covers.
