Someone did get punched into space, how about keeping the fight up there away from people? How about punching him further out into space?

Or punch Zod out into the ocean. The movie set rules that he could do it, but it was all.."Let's blow stuff up instead." Just inconsistent.

I'm suggesting the writers could create a tense battle without making the physics so extreme to where something got destroyed on literally every exchange of blows. Was it cool to look at? I mean if that's all you expected, sure. But Superman is supposed to be more than that.

(As a side note, both of these could be solved by a better script, it's as simple as that. You ask "What could Superman have done?" the answer, in this case because of Goyer, is "He could have had a better script that didn't put him in 1) Scenarios of wanton destruction 2) Been more clear about the abilities of Zod and Superman. As I've said in multiple threads, all the pieces were good, how it came together was really chaotic and convenient...*coughGoyercough*)
