the balk was called after the pitch because the team can choose to take the result of the play. For instance had he hit a single, they could have chosen to take the single and the result of the play. But because he got out, there was another chance.
the balk itself was borderline, but i could see it going either way. He was pretty quick to the plate.

If this is true, then I stand corrected regarding the delay. Every balk I have ever seen, the ump has called it before the ball ever reached the catcher/

Wrong... Play is dead.... Catcher interference they's let the play go and then team can choose depending on result.

I don't know the baseball rulebook so you may be right, but they usually stop the pitcher right when it happens and motion the runner over. They don't wait til the guy pitches and see the play result.
