Had a very disapointing experience with a charter captain last weekend. The low pressure system that stalled in Louisiana last week gave high winds, rain and dirty water. We had a charter to fish inland (speckled trout) on Sunday and Monday. Forecast was for 15-20 knt. Winds 3-4 foot seas and rain. Went out of hopedale last Sunday and tried the trout fishing. Dirty water and high seas made trout fishing impossible. We resorted to fishing reds in the marsh and we limited out. Next day Monday was calling for higher winds and more rain. I asked the capt. If we could reschedule the trip as we did not want to catch more reds. He informed me thar he was a fishing charter captain not a speckled trout captain and if I wanted to cancel I would lose my $200 deposit. Question is do all captains operate this way? The same thing happened last November with a small craft warning and temps in the 40's I had to forfeit my deposit this time $300 and no trip. When do captains let you reschedule a trip due to bad weather? Been fishing with this captain since 2006 and do 3-4 trips per year at $800 to $1000 each. Would think a repeat customer would be treated better. What do you think? Any experience with this?

Sounds like a tool. Most captains I have fished with are overly cautious not the other way around.

In my experience, the captain typically wants to have a good trip so they are inclined to reschedule before I am.

I would find someone else to spend my money with.

I understand that you/he cant control the weather, but he can control trip scheduling/rescheduling and what happens with your deposit.

Post his information.....complete bullshite. Had to cancel an offshore trip due to poor conditions and the captain didn't give me any bs at all. It's also kind of odd if you fished with the guy that much that he required a deposit at all. Most guys I've chartered, including offshore don't bother.

Please tell us who this guy is so we don't have the unfortunate instance of suing him. It is your OB duty to out this guy.

Did you cancel?

So, he didn't apply your deposit to a future trip?

Yes, you would think. Perhaps this guy just doesn't like you. Did you screw his wife?

Doesn't matter though...like others have said, you need to out this guy by posting his info.

This is what I have a problem with. A guide should never make this mistake if the client is a repaet customer.

My dad fishes with Cpt Mark Munson out of Shell Beach a couple times a year. He invited me to go last year and the weather/ wind was brutal. Mark worked his arse off that day and we almost skunded simply due to the conditions. He wouldn't even let us pay for his fuel that day. It was 4 of us, and we all left him $100 each for his efforts. He wouldn't take it, but we left it on his truck seat on our way out. Point being that good guides take care of their customers.

Out this guy so I never have to waste a day with him.

Just in case you want to try someone else, my dad runs charters out of Hopedale with help from my B-I-L for bigger groups. We've had a camp down there for 30+ years, and he started fishing the area a good bit before.

Like someone else mentioned, he wants the people to have a good trip otherwise it is no fun for everyone. However, even with bad weather he always has a secret hole for some trout or reds. He has a 4 or 5 day trip down there right now. My wife (who is no fisherman) and my 6 y/o nephew about hit their limit on trout last weekend, while I did some work around the camp. This is a guy you've been doing business with? Sounds like something is missing here.
