In a speech at the Texas GOP Convention in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) cracked a joke at Democrats’ expense that’s sure to rile up his political opponents.

“Mr. President, you love to trade people,” Paul said, according to Politico. “Why don’t we set up a trade? But this time, instead of five Taliban, how about five Democrats? I’m thinking John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi…”

The crowd reportedly erupted in cheers.

Sen. Paul was referring to the Obama administration’s controversial decision to release five members of the Taliban from Guantanamo Bay in exchange for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. He was also clearly not serious.

“I don’t know about y’all, but I’ve been a little bit annoyed with the president,” Paul said. “Releasing five Taliban senior officials is not only against the law, it’s illegal and wrong and he should never have done it,” he told the audience.

When he was later asked about the comments during a news conference, Paul reiterated that he was only joking about trading Democrats. He also included a joke in his explanation of his previous joke.

“It was a joke. Except for Nancy Pelosi, I was serious about her,” he said, later adding, “Well, I mean, it’s humor, and I hope there’s room for humor. I thought it was funny. It was meant to be humorous.”

Not everyone saw the humor. There was plenty of outrage over the joke on Twitter, with at least one user suggesting he was comparing Democrats to the Taliban.

Some would agree with the comparison of the Dems and the Taliban.

In other news, TX GOP platform endorses therapy to turn gays straight

ETA: Paul was crass and unstatesmanlike, but if you want to be president, you have to say stupid shite like this that fires up the kind of crass party hacks who attend state conventions. Back in the day, nobody outside the hall would have known about it. Now it's on twitter within minutes.

A talk show host on the local radio here in DC proposed another trade; one marine in a Mexican jail for 20,000,000 illegal aliens.

Aside from economics, logic, decency, honor, responsibility, duty, the one thing that democrats absolutely cannot understand is humor.

They are stuck in third grade fart joke level of humor.

Stupid thing to say. For someone the media is going to be gunning for, incredibly stupid. You can't rail on the exchange and then make jokes about it either.

Would actually benefit the country. That's why Obama would never do it.

Actually, the comparison of Democratic leaders with the Taliban is not too far off. People of Pelosi's ilk have done considerably more to damage the country than the five Taliban prisoners who were released.

Pretty sure Romney lost the presidency because of a "fire up the base" comment not unlike this one.

Add in Obama and Reid, and this would be the biggest boost to the American economy in history.

Rand Paul is growing on me. He's still a little off on a few issues but he seems more and more like a possible leader I could get on board with.

He seems to have a lot less "politician" in him than most at that level if that makes any sense.
