quote:I actually get it really. The point they're making is, choose who influences your children because whomever does is of the utmost concern.
what the frick were they thinking?
People who react to this are just doing the "oh my god.......hitler!!!!" thing.

I'm genuinely curious, because I'm not sure what my own thoughts are on that
I'd be pretty sure that you were just trying to dick with people because someone like Jessica Alba has probably said "Puppies are cute" before.
I'm sure if you could ask Adolf, he would say that getting kicked in the nuts sucks. That happens to be my stance, as well, but I wouldn't appreciate anybody trying to draw even a small equivalence (even if technically accurate) between me and Hitler.
That's not an apples to apples comparison with the billboard but the problem there lies in the fact that billboards are meant to make a quick impression. You're not supposed to stare at it trying to parse the message being sent.

quote:That's how I took it the moment I saw it.
Well it is a good cautionary quote in retrospect..perhaps that was their point
But, I guess they should've accounted for the lack of depth in thinking of most people.

Very good. However, "advertising" (and that's what this is) isn't usually made for the ten percent that can quickly discern the context.
It's made for the ninety percent who can't.

I get that.
It's one of those unfortunate realities. It's not good enough in our nation to just be smart. You have to be smart enough to anticipate what an idiot would think.

Very true. On the bright side, if you can do that with consistency, you can make a lot of money.
I envy people with the knack for it.

Examples are myriad.

No, I'd wonder why the frick you quoted Hitler for any reason whatsoever and if the quote was "puppies are cute - Hitler" I'd think you were completely fricked in the head.

That is too high level for the masses.

Like I said, I understand the intended message, but juxtaposing Hitler and smiling children is confusing to anyone and kind of disturbing. Maybe they thought that putting his name in evil red would get the message across. Now they're on the national news looking like total dumbasses.
And again, it's Alabama, so this could all have been intentional - sage wisdom from ole uncle Adolph.

quote:Not really. That's how Hitler took control of Germany. They stopped teaching their children regular school courses and instead "instilled" devotion to Germany, i.e. brainwashed them.

Kind of what CNN is doing today to democrat morons who can't think for themselves.

They messed up using Hitler's quote. Public perception counts. Very poor decision.
Posted on 6/4/14 at 5:27 am to UL-SabanRival
If they would have quoted Stalin I bet very few people would even think twice after seeing it.

A good way to avoid that is not to say racist things.
The problem is that many people don't realize that something that they said is or can very easily be construed as racist (or sexist, or homophobic, etc). Another problem, to which you alluded, is that people often have problems separating a racist comment from a racist person. Because of our society, everyone has biases. Everyone, at some time or another, says something that is or may be construed as racist.
Those who oppose racists need to point out that even though some said something racist, that person may not be. And the person who made the comment needs to acknowledge the mistake and genuinely work toward self improvement in that area.
But I don't expect most of this board to understand this or even try to understand this concept.
TL; DR: Everyone says stupid stuff, but saying stupid stuff doesn't make you stupid unless you really mean it and don't try to fix it.

Alabama is such a fricking terrible state. I would never live there

So they make an ad advocating owning the youth in Christian practices but use Adolph Hitler to try to show that brainwashing kids is a bad idea?

It's not that bad at all, beautiful state. Just have your crazies here and there

This does beg the question though, should a true statement not be repeated if it is spoken by a psychopath?
A psychopath? We're talking about one of the most evil, reviled figures in human history.
Basically, a smart person or organization does not quote Adolph Hitler in ANY context outside of a documentary, for ANY reason.
This story is just insane.

It's a good quote by a bad man.
DWI.
He'll wasn't it Whitney Houston who said I believe the children are our future, teach them we'll and let them lead the way?
Seems everybody has same mindset.
Pretty controversial to use hitter of all people on a sign though.
