Could Nintendo merge the Wii U and 3DS?

Would it be possible for Nintendo to merge the two systems? Instead of using the game pad, just have a 3DS or similar as a controller. Games (or at least portions) could be continued on the 3DS when traveling or to not tie up the TV.
To some degree they have already done this with the game pad, but there is still a great market for the pocket sized 3DS. It seems like it would be a great opportunity to put everything together in one package that could possibly save their dying hold on consoles.

I wouldn't be surprised if they could have some cross functionality but if Nintendo is planning a home/portable hybrid that is going to be whatever their next system is.

That was my next thought. It may not be possible with the current hardware.
Nintendo does a great job with portables, but phones and tablets are rapidly eating into that market too.
It is interesting to see what happens to Nintendo in the next 5 years. Perhaps they will give up on consoles, and go strictly with making great games.

the droves of people shelling out $299 for a Wii U just to play MK8 lead me to believe we're far from a place where Nintendo becomes a game developer only.

I'm in a similar boat as I won't buy one for myself until the new Zelda comes out.

For the Wii U and 3DS? No. Never, just not enough time left in the generation for that. Merging eShop...maybe.
But...
Rumor only, but the next console is nicknamed Fusion, I think that's at least been confirmed tentatively. There are registered patents that revolve around a portable device that can attach to a home device, per Nintendo.
So the big idea is that yes, the next console would quite possibly be both a Mobile and home system "fused."
I would also buy that it means the ecosystem is finally fused, that would be nice too. Subscription Nintendo games like a music service... take my money now.

Confirmed to be shown at E3. It was long in development last year and they decided against showing it.
Best time to get a wii is now with the MK bundle. Wiimote+ and Gamepad, and TWO games.

never going to happen. A failed console cant kill nintendo. They have massive bank, and their handheld is doing well. On top of that they stated not long ago that the Wii U is now being produced cheaper than it is sold.
