Can you leave your in-law's corpse at the Nursing Home, dont answer calls?

For example, let's say you have an elderly mother-in-law who you are not a big fan of and neither is your spouse. Once said in-law passes away, can you simply not talk to the nursing home or handle burial arrangements? Perhaps you don't want to take one last frick you from her in having to pay for the service, or you can insert your own reason.
What happens if you just abandon them and don't respond to the home or doctor when they call to inform of their passing?

sure, it happens all the time, they get turned over to the state for disposal (cremation)

Your spouse is evil and I wouldn't trust her. No one can hate their own mom that much. You can choose not to be around them, but at least respect them enough to take care of them in death. This shouldn't need to be said.

when you sign them up and enter them in the nursing home, you are also agreeing to not leave their corpse there after they dead
