The movie is going to be about the people or relationships or struggle or whatnot, with the sport as a backdrop.

For one thing, there are surprises in movies all the time. The audiance does not know the outcome before they see a movie most of the time.

Second, ie Moneyball, baseball was the focal point. The character relationships were important, but it was a movie about how baseball was changed. I understand what you are saying, but I don't think that applies to everything.
