Antarctic sea ice has grown to a record large extent for a second straight year, baffling scientists seeking to understand why this ice is expanding rather than shrinking in a warming world.
On Saturday, the ice extent reached 19.51 million square kilometers, according to data posted on the National Snow and Ice Data Center Web site. That number bested record high levels set earlier this month and in 2012 (of 19.48 million square kilometers). Records date back to October 1978.

Some point to stratospheric ozone depletion, but a new study published in the Journal of Climate notes that computer models simulate declining – not increasing – Antarctic sea ice in recent decades due to this phenomenon (aka the ozone “hole”).

Tuba says it's because global warming is decreasing the salinity.

Yet more evidence of climate change.

Too bad the Republicans are for climate change!
If they would get on board with stopping it they might win some elections one day.

Which is a super duper gross simplification of what the current explanation is, but I expect that from him.

Salt (and other impurities) depress the freezing point, meaning you have to cool the water more to freeze it. If saline levels are reduced, the water freezes at a higher temperature. That part makes sense to me, but I don't really understand the mechanism by which global warming reduces saline levels.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think an increase in global temperatures would increase the amount of evaporation of the world's oceans, which would then increase saline levels. Not decrease. I'm not a climate scientist, though, so there very well could be something I'm missing.

The fact that you aren't a climate scientist probably means that you are spot on in your analysis

He suggested the melting ice caps were causing that.

The vast majority of the world's fresh water is frozen in glaciers and ice sheets. As that freshwater melts, it dilutes the salinity of the oceans. Salt water is denser than fresh water (i admittedly may have that backwards) so the intrusion of cold freshwater at the poles would shut down the north atlantic conveyor.
This system works by warm water near the equator (being less dense than cold water at the poles) rises and flows north before cooling, sinking, and flowing back south.
The loss of salinity prevents the cold water from sinking and moving south, shutting down the conveyor meaning far colder temperatures for the north atlantic.
How this effect of loss of salinity refers to growing ice levels, i am not sure.

It's all part of global warming, don't worry about the mechanics of it, just be afraid, be very afraid.

why is it interesting?
shouldn't you not trust this science either?

How hard would it be to run studies on the ocean waters to see if they are indeed changing?
Are the oceans less salty?
Are the oceans less salty?

I thought salinity varies by temperature. Warmer water could have less salinity and freeze at warmer temps, no?
Posted on 5/29/14 at 8:12 pm to Ye_Olde_Tiger
Salinity levels of water are more than just about temperature

Because it's not like we can MEASURE Antarctic Ocean salinity or something.
It isn't like we KNOW at what temperature water with a given salt content freezes.
It isn't like we could EASILY run those calculations to test contributions of salinity to the growing extent of Antarctic Sea Ice.
So apparently, "scientists" in 2014 are left with no alternative to speculate, guess, and chase unicorns.
Right?
