I thought LSU owned GEAUX, so in turn ULL couldn't trade mark Geaux Cajuns.

This isn't something that matters.

Why did ULL not do this a long time ago?!

I know LSU has the "Geaux Font" which they guard jealously, but I didn't know that the school had trademarked the word "Geaux".

I'm fine with ULL paying a royalty to LSU to use Geaux.

LSU owns Geaux Tigers. i think Geaux has probably become genericized.

I'm pretty sure that USL/ULL has used "geaux" for so long that nobody remembers its genesis.

OK?

Most if not all universities (and actually some high schools) obtain trademark for slogans, words and symbols associated with the university and athletic programs (for example, "Green Wave"). It allows them to license the right to use the trademark to retailers and other third parties for various approved purposes in exchange for royalties and fees. Many universities have a trademark and licensing office that specifically oversees this function. I am surprised UL at L had not already done it.

I can't believe they hadn't done this before.

Not true. Years ago I was selling t-shirts at Cafe Press and was attempting to use my screen name GeauxTiger as part of the marketing. Designs were not LSU specific, in that they had no LSU names or images, but merely my handle on them got LSU's attention.
LSU's attorney explained that I could use GEAUX, but not in combination with Tigers in any form, and could not use ANY image of a Tiger in combination with the colors purple and gold. The last one seemed completely unenforceable, but since I had no interest in fighting with LSU I just stopped.
Point is, they don't (or at least did not in 2001) own Geaux. It's used everywhere in the region.

And here we go....

Both schools are located in South Louisiana... we're going to argue about the use of "Geaux"... really!!

The school in the Cajun part of the state rightfully owns Geaux. Y'all can trademark AIDS if you want.
