I would fix the car, you can get another 150k out of it if ya take care of it. I had a Mazda 6 with the 2.3 I sold with 189k miles, and the guy I sold it to is still driving it.

I would assume he is refering to the clutch on the A/C compressor not the transmission. Having to do A/C work and replace a headlight is far from falling apart. If you want a new car go buy it but the one you have will work, its a matter of choice.

Fix the old car and place it for sale while she drives it. When it sells, it should get a higher price because it is in working condition. The repairs should be covered for a year of warranty which will make the buyer feel better.
Then take that money and go buy something that makes sense financially and fits the baby situation.

I drove a 2 door Honda Prelude with 250K miles on it till my son was almost 4. I had a similair decision as you when he was born, Do I put new tires, water pump, etc on and keep it or sell? We decided to repair and keep it since we could pay that out of pocket, but didnt have the money for a new car at the time. Its doable in a small car with a small child, but we also had the wife's SUV. I mainly used the honda for commuting solo, occasionally dropping the baby off at daycare - had to fold the front seat all the way forward to fit a car seat. Usually whoever had the baby would drive the SUV and the other was left with the honda.
At that mileage, I would agree that the car should have plenty of miles left, you arent half way through its life yet.

Your issues don't sound like the car is falling apart. It would be hard for me to drop the cash only to gain 50k miles. I'm in a similar situation with a 21 month old. It depends on the car. My car runs like a top (2nd owner 99 lexus with 218k) while my wife's car probably has 1-1.5 years left in it before a major repair (3rd owner 01 Buick with 89k). I can fix a lot of things myself and have cash on hand to have someone fix it if need be so I'm just hoping the Buick last 1-2 more years so I can build my house first. Not getting rid of the Lexus for a long time.

2008 Mazda 3s sent to the US & Canada were built in Japan, not Brazil or Mexico or on some other turd world assembly line. It's not a flawed car. Stay up with the minor repairs and it will give you good service for easily two or three more years. Have a second kid and you'll need something bigger. Cars are fiscal losers 100% of the time; every month more you get out of the paid for one is a win for your bottom line. Tough it out, it means real savings to you.
