I lived in the Bay Area for a few years. SLO is a great area but can feel a bit removed, which is fine for most of the people that live there. It's a nice little beach/college town.
As for California as a whole, it was OK but I couldn't wait to get back to Texas. The high cost of living and the people in general ruined California for me.

my company is based in cali and all the employees love the weather and scenery but hate everything else
traffic
10% state income tax
high as shite property taxes
housing market is nuts
