The sad thing is that I don't think you even realize that you didn't counter my statement, but reinforced it.
Taxis and car rentals are two different niches.
Taxis are useful for quick transits from one place to another, which is facilitated by self driving cars.
Car rentals are for when you expect a series of stops in succession and don't want to wait for transit.
As the car will be waiting in the lot for you to use it again, the self driving aspect becomes an optional convinent novelty as opposed to a fundamental shift in practice.
The only real benefit is how you don't physically need to drive it back to the rental place, but the time between then and actually renting the car didn't change.

taxis are driven by someone else, you are paying for that time. without the need to pay the driver, you can take the car for 10 mins or 10 days....rates vary based on how much you used vehicle(like Zip Car, 7/hour, $70/day)
When you are done with the 3 day rental...it goes right back into taxi mode...until it needs to be rented for a longer term use or needs maintenance.
I don't want to argue this really anymore. We'll see how it's implemented...but IYO the current car rental industry will not be effected with the implementation of on-demand, self-driving car service.
What about Auto Insurance companies?
