Bryant is a beast. Astros blew that one.

Got rocked early this season and they sent him back to extended spring training apparently he was having a hard transition from the college 7 day schedule to the pro 5 day....His velocity was down and they were hints of dead arm...last week there were reports that he was hitting 98 and consistently 95 or 96 and would likely make one more start in extended ST before joining a farm team...likely lancaster

This has to be extremely troubling for a number 1 pick. Jeez...

I hate to say it, but Appel is reminding me more and more of Luke Hochevar-bust level.

Kid hasn't even been a professional for a year and he's a bust.

I was all about Bryant. His upside seemed too tremendous.

Gonna be fun when we add someone like Bundy and more to prospect watch.

It looks like the Cubs finally have a stud prospect that's panning out. Granted, he's never been past AA ball, but Bryant is absolutely tearing up AA pitching. It seems like it's been a long time since the Cubs have had a highly touted prospect turn into a major league star. Castro is as close as it gets, and he's been decent, but not the star I was hoping he'd be. We all know how many busts the Cubs have had in the last 15 years.

I wonder what the chances of the Cubs picking up Nola really are. Have there been any indications yet as to who the Cubs are targeting?

Not really. Some speculation they go underslot with pentecost or conforto

Why would you say not great? Are you thinking Nola will go higher than 4th?

Jesus, what is with you? I didn't call him a bust, I said he's looking like one so far in his professional career being as he was the #1 pick.

I still think he'll be a tick better than Hochevar, IN MY OPINION. Maybe a solid #3-4 starter.

Either way (I'm not saying Appel will bust), but the pick is a bust if Bryant keeps up at this pace. Still not quite sure how you pass up on that kind of power in today's game.

I think no matter how you slice it, bust was the wrong word to use. It has been an ominous start to his career, but bust is strong.

Possibly. But a college pitcher (a 4 year college pitcher mind you) should be better than this:

NYP league- .300 BAA, 3.60 ERA
MID League- .236 BAA, 3.82 ERA, only 7k/9IP
I know this was an extremely small Sample size that's almost meaningless, but these struggles/mediocre performances against 18-19 year olds as a 22 year old polished college pitcher are worrisome.

Then there's the struggles at A+ this year compounded with him being sent back to extended spring training? As a number one pick? I'm not sure what other word to use. Maybe he'll bounce back, but I'd almost bet money that he'll never be a solid #1 or #2 pitcher on a division winning team. Hell, even in college he never really dominated like he should given his stuff.

because i don't wnat lsu fans to get their hopes up that teh cubs will reach for him. Becuase him at 4 would be a reach but not so much of one that fills in at drasticly underslot.

of course it could happen, i just don't think it's likely. Do you?

IMO, it won't happen. #4 seems way too high to take Nola. I guess it depends on what you believe his upside to be. Some teams before this season were writing him off as a solid #3-4 guy who will eat innings. Now, there have been a lot of bullish scouting reports saying many teams believe his potential is a step below/poor man's Jake Peavy, which would entrench him as a VERY solid #2. If you believe he's that, then drafting him at 4 isn't really that bad a reach. Personally, I believe he goes anywhere from 8-20. Probably not past the Blue Jays at 9/10.

My take is that Nola is actually fairly close to MLB ready and he is very safe pick. May not ever be an ace, but could be a #2 pitcher with it being probable that he would be a #3.

If the Cubs think that Baez and Bryant are pretty close to being ready, it might be a good idea to pick up a guy like Nola who would only take a year or year and a half to get called up to the show so that he can join a team that would have a good offense with Bryant and Baez (and Olt, Rizzo, Castro)

I'm starting to feel like Nola wouldn't be a reach at #4.

I don't disagree with any of that, and while i'd encourage a safe pick like that i just don't think it's going to happen with a lot of really good pitchers (some due to injury) avalible in subsequent rounds. I expect the cubs to either address the lack of cactching in the system with pentecost or take gordon.

his rise has been steep and i certainly think he's top 10, just more towards the back of top 10.

but that's just weekend watcher (and lifting info from other people) predicting there i don't have any real guage on these things.

Bad MLB teams draft by need. Acquire the best talent regardless of position. It will sort itself out. The MLB draft is NOT the NFL draft. Any team drafting Pentecost top 5 is stretching harder than if the Stros took Nola 1.1.

So would you expect Cubs fans to be upset if they were to draft another short stop?
