I think Decoration Day is their best, Southern rock Opera is the most ambitious, and Brighter Than Creation's Dark is their most personal.
But the one you should start with is The Dirty South. It's their most accessible album, and if you don't like it, you won't like their other stuff. Once you fall in love with Dirty South, then move on to the albums in the first paragraph in the order listed.

I'd personally say start with Decoration Day. The first album I got by them was The Dirty South, and I really didn't dig it initially. I was turned off by the vocals, and it just didn't seem all that appealing. It grew on me enough to make me check out Decoration Day, which I immediately loved, and then when I listened to The Dirty South again, it clicked for me. To me, Decoration Day is a little more straightforward and heartfelt, whereas The Dirty South is generally darker and quirkier. Either one is a pretty good starting point though.

Dirty South is a good jumping off point, then if you dig it go with Southern Rock Opera. Those 2 are by far their best albums.
