Why? Because he did what he felt he had to do to get a paid gig when no other options were available?

It depends on the circumstances. If there was a paid internship that he could have taken that would have gotten him relevant experience, then yeah, he screwed up by taking the unpaid internship. But I'm guessing that wasn't the case.

If he had to choose between an irrelevant paid job vs a relevant unpaid internship, then I think he made the right choice. Always go for what has the better return on investment, as long as you can survive. This is especially true when you are young.
