Earlier in the day, Gleason awoke and was struggling to breathe, the source told WDSU. He was taken to the emergency room at a Jefferson Parish hospital, and doctors performed a tracheotomy to help alleviate the problem.

The source described it as a hastily scheduled surgery, but noted that family knew such a procedure could one day be necessary.
Was just a matter of when

He probably has the resources to stay home, and not at a care facility.

What a terrible disease. The mind is unaffected through all of this. Has to be the most awful experience imaginable.

Als and Huntington's are the absolute worst. My buddy's dad died of Als and he eventually had a traech. Unfortunately we're not likely looking at much more time here. fricking sucks

So sad for this awesome man and family... Anytime I see the Steve Gleason story I cry like a baby. No white flags

Well that sucks.
He probably doesn't have much more time, unfortunately.

#NoWhiteFlags Steve... your fight makes me realize that when things get rough, it really isn't shite. Love family and cherish every second.

For the last several years I have observed a lady who lives near me battle the effects of arthritis. Over time it has swollen and deformed her joints and watched her progressively lose almost any semblance of flexibility or movement. I've offered to help with getting her groceries to the car or with other tasks as I have run into her but she kindly declines. I've never seen her without either a smile on her face or a look of determination. She has faced her lot in life with courage and dignity. It has been an honor to witness her and the Steve Gleasons of the world. I am so thankful for my health and happiness and my family's and pray God gives me 1/10 of the strength and courage to face my battles as he has given these everyday heroes .
