re: Gleason had to get a tracheotomy today

im not a saints fan, but my whole family is and i read this board from time to time. I always pull for the daints unless they are playing my team.. with that said, Frick ALS!! Man i hate hearing this, he is such a strong and brave man. I really do not see how he can be so strong during all of this. I would have fell apart after hearing the news. Gleason is a great man and deserves better. But i know God has a plan and everything happens for a reason. Watching gleason makes me think that the next time things get bad for myself, to stay positive because it can always be worse. Best wishes Gleason

#NoWhiteFlags Steve... your fight makes me realize that when things get rough, it really isn't shite. Love family and cherish every second.

I do too. I'm not even lying when I say I'm tearing up when I type this. He was a great Saint, but an even better person and you just hate to see this happening. Beautiful wife, beautiful son, a whole life ahead of him with the resources to make it amazing, and he gets struck by this stroke of bad luck. So unfortunate.

No White FLags #37!

If you are into prayer, say a few for Gleason.

The trache is needed when the patient can no longer breathe on their own. :-(

With Steve's positive attitude and physical condition, I see him beating the median.

Let's hope so. Keep up the good fight and we are praying for you.

re: Gleason had to get a tracheotomy today

For the last several years I have observed a lady who lives near me battle the effects of arthritis. Over time it has swollen and deformed her joints and watched her progressively lose almost any semblance of flexibility or movement. I've offered to help with getting her groceries to the car or with other tasks as I have run into her but she kindly declines. I've never seen her without either a smile on her face or a look of determination. She has faced her lot in life with courage and dignity. It has been an honor to witness her and the Steve Gleasons of the world. I am so thankful for my health and happiness and my family's and pray God gives me 1/10 of the strength and courage to face my battles as he has given these everyday heroes .

got to see him at my step sister's graduation from Loyola back on May 10th at the Superdome.

He received an honorary degree and was one of the guest commencement speakers.

he seemed to be in good spirits as you might imagine.

His wife was right there with him the whole time and he was bragging on her some.

I think it's hard to accurately speculate on "how much time" he has left. Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with an ALS variety of motor neuron disease at age 21. Fifty something years later, he's still smarter than most of the people on the planet and is contributing more to society and science than most ever will.

Don't write off Steve Gleason just yet.

Honestly, if I were in his shoes, I don't think I'd want to live like that. He's a tough guy.

I don't think he will have to live like that much longer , 70% do not last beyond 5 years of diagnosis and 90% do not last beyond the ten year mark. And you are right he is a tough guy.
