I don't know if I could tour that.
I like to think I'm a pretty strong guy, but I know in my heart I would end up crying like a baby at some point were I to tour that.

There are people that post on this site that likely weren't even born when 9/11 happened. That kind of blows my mind.
The horror of that day, just watching it unfold in real time on TV, can never be erased from my memory.

I was in German with Herr Leder when it happened.

I've been to Dachau. It was pretty eerie. I'll probably have a harder time at the 9/11 museum just due to vividly remembering that day.

Yeah I have been to the holocaust memorial like someone mentioned on here and it didn't hit me like going to just the memorial pools did in NYC. I saw the second plane hit and those people leaping to their death to escape the fire. It was much more real to me. I can't imagine seeing the museum in the same day the first time I went...

Dachau was miserable.
If I remember, no birds chirped around the camp. They made a point of telling us that before we got there.

It's one of those events that you'll always remember vividly. I was in between classes at ULL, and the conference center was buzzing with people trying to make sense of what exactly was going on.

I definitely want to go there

I was just finishing PT. It was definitely an 'oh shite' day to be in the army. My life changed dramatically that morning.
On another note, whatever happened to Sept 11th becoming Patriots Day or something like that? I heard about it years ago and nothing since.

First on my list to visit when I go later this year.

Very powerful stuff.
I was reading a little about it earlier on CNN, and one of the curators was talking how to display the horror of the day but also keeping from overwhelming people - like the fire helmet in the slideshow makes you know just how traumatic the event was that caused that damage.
The solution was to put some areas off in alcoves so it isn't right in your face, you only see it if you want to - such as the images of the people jumping from the upper floors.
I also find it amazing that they have returned all unidentified remains to the site and they are behind a wall in the museum - out of site and not accessible to the public, but can be accessed for DNA testing and such.

How does visiting a concentration camp work? Are there shuttle buses? Are their tours and park rangers?
I just wonder how they keep it solemn without it turning into a typical tourist destination complete with a snack bar. I'm not trying to be insensitive. Just wondering how it works.

Yes. But it's still very solemn. There's no snack bar but there is a bookstore.
edit-I didn't see any actual 'tours' being led by guides, but I don't know.

Will definitely visit next time back in NYC.
I must say, I find it really cool that someone had the foresight to save and preserve all these artifacts.

I went to a small memorial museum across from ground zero when I went to NYC in 2009. Cant wait to see this one!

Nice
The only thing wrong with it is that it will cost $24 for an adult to visit. The Helmsley Foundation donated $2.3 million so that every schoolkid in the city can come free for the next two years. But as former mayor Mike Bloomberg, chairman of the museum, said in a news conference, this should be free — paid for by the federal government, like most national landmarks and parks.
“Write your congressman,” he urged.

LINK
Some may already have seen this but it got me when it came on the TV at the makeshift museum across the street. Incredible story.
Sorry if link doesn't work...on my mobile.
