In an email obtained by Campus Reform, Assistant Professor Eli Hvastkovs told his students to prepare "family friendly" statements for the chemistry department's recognition event. He said the remarks should refrain from mentioning God.
"I've had some submissions that needed to be edited. so [sic] here are some guidelines,” Hvastkovs wrote. "1. You can't thank God. I'm sorry about this – and I don't want to have to outline the reasons why."

In a separate email to chemistry students this week, ECU Provost Dr. Marilyn Sheerer said that religious references "of any type" will not be restricted.

Probably because they are hilariously ignorant. Good call.

I love how people like this fail to realize how hypocritical they are.

Professors who usurp the rights, moments, etc. of students are a huge pet peeve of mine.
I've experienced it first hand and it is quite common. I'd love to see a graduating class president or someone similar issue a statement in one of these situations basically saying that this is our commencement, not yours, so please keep your political leanings to yourself and stop trying to interfere with our speaker/speaking planning.
It's extremely narcissistic.

Stupid, people should be able to thank whoever they want.

If your faith in God (any God) is what gave you the strength to make it through the tough times, why in the frick would this assclown not let you thank that being?
If he tried this shite, all I would do is thank my priest and talk about my priest's beliefs for an hour!
