re: What moves are you expecting this off-season?

Someone had mentioned a month or two ago that Roberts might pass the threshold of starts to increase his qualifying offer. Does anyone remember what the threshold was and if he passed it? I know that most posters will kick a dog if they resign Roberts, but it is definitely a possibility if he didn't pass that threshold.

If he did pass it, they'll probably just renounce his rights. I'm pretty sure they could still sign him as a free agency, though. Just not at the 3.whatever million that the option would increase to.

Disclaimer - Calm down. I'm not advocating resigning him. I'm just trying to lay out the facts.

If Dell pulls it off, without:

1. Taking on an equally dumbass contract of a middle of the road player,

2. Without having to add starting type players to sweeten the pot, or

3. Without throwing in draft choices,

I'd say he did a great job of correcting a major error on his part.

I pray he can get Gordon out of here without major damage. It's not going to happen this year; it might happen next year with his expiring contract. Even if Gordon has the same numbers he had this season, I think the Suns will take him next year because they'll only have to commit to a 1 year "look and see".

S&T of guys like Roberts and Aminu packaged with Pierre Jackson.

At first I was thinking that I want Jackson traded ASAP just so people stop obsessing over a borderline NBA player, but if he ever contributes for another team, we'll have to hear about it then.

Well he's going to have to do one of those things most likely. That's reality.

41 games started and yes he passed it, 42 starts. However, just because he qualified for a higher qualifying offer doesn't mean you give it to him. Smith and Aminu are both guys we didn't pick up options on that we ended up resigning for the same or less than their option.

I still don't think you can call it an error on his part unless he outright ignored the medical staff, which doesn't seem to be the case. Gordon really kind of set him up for failure when he signed the Phoenix offer. Had he played the hand differently and informed Demps that he was going to sign it, Dell could have explored a sign-and-trade with the Suns.

That's the part that makes me think the "heart is in Phoenix" stuff was overplayed. If he really wanted to play there, his agent certainly would have told him that doing what I said above was the best way to make it happen. Frankly, I think he just said that as his public justification for signing the deal, when in reality he signed it to get more money. Some people don't like to seem like money-grubbers.

That's what I thought. I don't think there's any way he gets more than $3M on the FA market, and he's not someone you can't lose, so you just renounce.

With that said, when you renounce, you can no longer use him for a sign-and-trade. I don't see him having much value in a S&T, though. That would require someone wanting him at that $3.23M bad enough to give up an asset. Maybe they use him just as expiring salary for a contract dump trade.

I'm assuming you have to pick up the option before the free agency period begins. I guess Dell could try to make a trade happen before the option date. If he can't find one, you pretty much have to renounce.

There's, most probably, a lot of truth to this. If he really wanted to be with the Suns and the Suns really wanted him, why have those 2 lovers matched up by now?

The Suns haven't initiated talks about wanting to trade for Gordon (which they could have done 1 year after their offer sheet was matched) and Mr. Exercycle hasn't said jack shite about demanding a trade.

1. Trade Gordon for a decent 3 or 5
2. Sign a decent 3 or 5 in our available price range
3. Get rid of Aminu and Roberts
4. Bring in Pierre and hope he can be a legit back up 1
5. Sign role players with remaining cap

That would be ideal.

I don't care if it's a scrub player. As long as the contract's not worse I'll be happy.

The Suns have a new front office that isn't dumb, unlike the guys that signed Gordon to the max offer sheet

We're always a day late and an administration away.

The sad thing is that Mr. Exercycle will just plow along here and collect his $15M a year for the next 2 years and someone will pick him up like he's not damaged goods who will become a medical casualty when things don't get his way.
See Andrew Bynum for a classic example.
