Looking for an entry level mountain bike

Trying to get into biking and I'm in the market for an entry level mountain bike. I'm on a college budget so looking to spend around $500. Any suggestions would be awesome.

I'd say craigslist but I just looked and there isnt anything worthy on there unless you want to spend a grand.
What you should be looking for is a hardtail 26, 27.5 or 29" (tire size) with disc brakes in whatever size you need (5'8"=medium, adjust accordingly).
This bike is going to be about the best bang for your buck:

The brand isnt as recognizable as Trek or Specialized but I promise you its just as good as anything they put out in the price range.

Based on my height I'd need a Large size frame (20") and probably something with 29 inch tires because I plan on doing some road riding as well. Might be looking at a hybrid.

IMO the best bike for that price is a Giant.
Check out the Revel and Revel 29er.

Bought a Trek 4300 back in 06. First few years I rode many trails with friends. They had nicer bikes but I did just fine with my Trek. Now it is a neighborhood ride bike with the kids.

Do you have any discount stores in your area? There's this place called Bargain Hunt near our house. As far as I can tell, it is mostly stuff that has been returned to Amazon, Target, and Wal-Mart. There are some other things in there, but most of the large items (bikes, furniture, trampolines, etc) there are still in a box, return labels blacked out, from one of those retailers. I found a Cannondale that we paid $260 for. It was an Amazon return. Decent 26 inch bike. I had it assembled and tuned up at a local bike shop for under $40. I put most of it together myself, but the front brakes were being a little weird (disc brakes F and R) and I didn't trust myself to get those together right having never worked on them before.

See if you have any bike shops that rent bikes. They'll often sell used but we'll maintained bikes in that price range.

Make sure you spend the money and buy a good bike.

I am getting back into this and just ordered a 2015 TREK X-caliber 6 - a little more than your budget ($699) but great entry level, hydraulic disc brakes, light.

I'll sell you my Gary Fischer Hoo Koo E Koo for $800. I paid $1400 + tax for it and also added wireless computer. I used it about 5 times.

I'm in the market for a bike as well. I've settled on a Clycocross style. To me it seems to be a good combination bike to ride on roads, trails and round the levee / Lsu lakes area and still be able to get muddy at times.
No one in Baton Rouge has one n the floor but one of the Local bike shops is getting one sent in for me to try.
Bikesdirect web site has good prices, free shipping and no taxes.
