Layered tracks...or so I remember reading. If you listen close with that in mind you can hear several guitars playing the same thing.

he didn't get specific, but he said in the 'third stage' liner notes that the layered guitars were passed through a rockman, giving it that symphonic-type sound. pretty much all the sounds & effects on that album were created without the aide of synths...must've been tough to resist, since synths were all over the place in the 80's
