Question regarding LOST - Season 3 / "Jacob's" house SPOILERS

When Ben takes Locke to go see Jacob for the first time, and Locke hears "Help me". That's obviously the Man in Black, right? Before getting to the little shack, John picks up some sand that was obviously out of place. I seem to remember this being in that foot statue in the last season.
I have watched season 1-4 multiple times, but the last two seasons I only caught once. Not sure if this was covered.
FYI, this rewatch is bad arse

I'm on season 4 of my rewatch so I'll look out for any clues to that in the last 2 seasons.

I feel sorry for myself that I could never get into LOST, I know it's a good show it just never captured my interest. I started watching on Netflix and blew through the first 1 1/2 seasons in a few weeks, but then I just lost interest

The sand is actually ashes. And the ashes were used to barricade the MIB in the cabin for all of those years until Hurley got frightened and ran over the ashes, causing the barrier to break, thus releasing MIB to choose another host (Locke). You see the people at the temple in season 6 use ashes to keep the MIB out as well as Bram when he's in the foot of the statue protecting himself from fLocke. Hurley asked that temple assistant Lennon why they sprinkled the ashes, he responded,"To keep HIM out." Now I assume if you use something to keep someone out, then you can use it to keep him in.
I love and miss lost. They need a movie.
