I think that's the reason for the 3 year delay. If you are willing to wait for the more current seasons fine, but if you want them now, it's only $39.99 per season. Amazon views Prime as a gateway drug for paid content.

Sure, streaming is better, but this doesn't vastly change the game. The programming that people are concerned with - the new programming - is still only accessible with an HBO subscription.

People are acting like this is HBO Go brought to you by Amazon Prime. It's not.

This is a big win for amazon prime. With the lack of original content (I know they have a few things and just sent several more to series but it's not OITNB or HOC) this will be there big selling point. And if they can get you to watch these HBO shows and to pay for others that's something Netflix doesn't have.

The HBO catalog is just seen as a different level of programming.

that's not always true. I've never watched a single HBO series. I've been kicking around the idea of getting HBO for a while just for the series, but I don't want an additional $20/month on top of the Dish bill I already have.

Now, I can watch a bunch of older series for free, basically, since I've been a Prime customer for years

an hbo subscription is less than $200 a year. do people really nickel and dime this hard? cut out 1 or two nice dinners A YEAR and its paid for.

hell, if you gathered all your loose change for the entire year, im sure you could pay for hbo

Yes, of course many do. Me, for example. I also don't spend $200 on 2 nice dinners per year.

I was going to say that I haven't seen anyone act like like this, but wife just literally texted me this article and asked "does this mean we get HBOGo now?"

I think this is only half right. Yes most of the buzz is around current shows, but there also are a ton of people like me who have never seen other shows that have gotten quite a bit of buzz in the past like The Wire or Eastbound and Down. Could I get those on DVD? Yes, but my DVD queue is pretty full already because it's the only way to see decent newly released movies.

It's HBOGo Lite. The access provided by streaming vs. DVD just isn't comparable. I didn't see GoT for the first time until about a month ago when I finally started getting to it in my DVD queue. Had it been available for streaming I'd have tried it out sooner and moved the remaining seasons to the top of my queue much sooner. Yes GoT isn't available in this deal, but the basic point is that you can't just dismiss the ease of access streaming provides by saying "you could get that on DVD if you really wanted to" I may not know I really want to without the easy access provided by streaming.

True Blood and the Newsroom are the only shows listed in the deal that I've seen and already had in my DVD queue. The others I may have never gotten added to my queue, but because I can stream it, I'll probably check several of them out, and if all seasons aren't available and I like the show, I'll add it to my DVD queue. I get your point about not overselling it, but you're underselling it as much as you're saying others are overselling it.

It is $19/month on Dish ($228/yr). Sure, I could pay for it, but I prefer not to spend my money on that.

I don't get it either. I was planning on watching The Sopranos this summer. I have Prime and HBO. I'm likely going to cancel HBO now once this season of GOT ends..

Kind of is though. People like myself, who have only had HBO for a year, still haven't seen many of the old shows. I can now watch those on my Prime account.

What's stopping me from canceling HBO right after GOT ends then picking it up again once Boardwalk begins? I can now pay $19/month for 5 months of the year instead of 12.

HBO Go allows people to watch new shows same day. With Amazon you can watch the new episode of Silicon Valley.., in three years. Game of Thrones is not going to be on there.

Sure, if old content is what you're looking for, this is good news. I'd love to see the HBO Go breakdown in terms of what content users are streaming. I imagine the vast majority is new content.

Regardless, I love that this is happening. It'll make Netflix step up its game. Competition is great. I just don't see this as something particularly huge right now.

The benefit to HBO is quite clear. I'm sure they got a bundle of dough from Amazon for old programming. In addition to a bundle of dough, any series that is still airing new episodes will benefit HBO by either new subscriptions or sales. For example, if someone gets hooked on Boardwalk, they are either going to subscribe or buy instead of waiting three years.
