So Fish, if I wanted a full size version of that, how many coats of stain and varnish needed to protect it with being on the water maybe 6 times a year.
I appreciate it for the artistic side and the opportunity to play with it a few times each year.

One coat of stain applied by hand rubbed in with a clean cloth. 3-4 coats of spar varnish inside and 4-5 outside will seal it.
A full size is going to take over a qt of stain and close to a gallon of varnish. Do sand in between each coat. As long as you keep it out the water and sun when not used, it should last a life time.
