Do it in your back yard. Y'all will end up back at your house anyway

You have to build a fire & make s'mores & roast weiners.
Bring:
Flashlights
Board game
Cards to play fish
Pillows & sleeping bags
Bug spray
A book to read to them.

Backyard. No doubt. Last thing you want is that 3 am drive home in the dark. Same experience in the yard (far as kids are concerned) and you have a out if things get bad. I definitely would go in the yard with a 3 year old. Woods may be fine for 5 year old. (I've got two boys. 2 and 5)

Don't stay home. If you've never done it before, head to your nearest state park with availability near restrooms. Bring sleeping bags, stuff to cook on the fire, and maybe a game or two so y'all can play when they get tired of hiking and exploring.
Tell them mom kicked y'all out of the house and bring you some beer for when you put them to bed.
Enjoy the peace. Always a good time.

Back yard is the best option. Get some hot dogs. Beware of smores and marshmellows. They will be hyper and crash. Maybe some, but limit the intake. If you are at home, you can go get things you forget from the house. A trial run is recommended.

I took my then 5 and 3 yr old girls last year. Camped out on a sandbar on the river. Here's what I figured out.

My girls will survive an EMP attack. They can entertain themselves with sticks and sand.

Bring plenty of bug repellant (thermacells and plenty refills)

Leave the caffeine at home. They'll drink water.

Teach them how to play battle (cards). The big one should be old enough.

Bring more pillows and blankets than you think you need. They'll get stuff spilled on them and mud tracked on them.

Bring something to start a fire quickly. Kids are impatient and at that age teaching about fire building is difficult. It's better to just spray an accelerant and have fire quickly.

Bring medicine for allergies. They'll get into something that can be fixed with Benadryl.

Don't, I repeat DO NOT, bring a puppy and the children. That was a mistake I'll never make again.

Wake them up early the morning of campout to make sure they get tired early. You don't want them calling for mom at 10:00 pm.

Don't expect to catch or kill anything to eat, or get anything whatsoever productive done. Plan on just keeping them happy and safe. Save serious trips for when they are bigger.

We've camped with ours since they were less than a year old. We started at Tickfaw a State Park. Air mattresses, very few toys, flashlights/glowsticks, favorite book, their pillows, and a nightlight. Peanut butter and jelly for dinner. Their favorite cereal for breakfast. It really wasn't that difficult. They were so occupied w nature that they were exhausted and sleeping by sundown.

For a 3 and 5, make sure to bring their bikes.

Tickfaw is very easy and only 45 minutes from BR. They have a nice playground and a small water splash park. All of the trails are on boardwalks, and most of them are short loops. They also have a great nature center with kid friendly activities. We never need many toys. They stay occupied the whole time.

Best $15 per night we've spent!

Hot dogs
beer
marsh mallows
Cheetohs
Mountain Dew

I brought my 3 year old camping years ago and this is all we brought. He puked all in the bottom of our tent and all I had was a little light on my head to try and clean it up at 2AM. I just scooped it up with my shirt and threw it in the fire. Ahhhh the memories.

Might be easier to bring the 5 yr alone first and then both the next time. Probably be a lot harder with both going for the first time.
