Our system keeps the best from ever running.
I don't even agree with some of his social stances and I'd vote for him without thinking twice.

And there lies a major problem. Decent, smart people (of which our country has many) ... simply would never want to put up with the BS of running for office and being in office.
So ... we get the turds.
Think about this: Harry Reid is a powerful, United States Senator.
It's depressing.
