Yea, but we "needed" to make the playoffs this year, so we might as well not even offer him an extension and just let him walk because Monty apologists!!!!

Well, the question is who wants to hire the truck to tow it from its current site.

The Monty love is too great in this thread. We won 34 games and have missed the playoffs 3 years in a row. If you guys are giddy with that, then there's not much I can do to change your mind. Enjoy.

lolwut? you do realize that everyone in this thread has at multiple times this season called for monty to be fired

eta: you just came in here with all kinds of inaccuracies and falsehoods. AD doesn't have the option to leave after this contract. The Pelicans have all the power

I think they could use an upgrade at HC, but they will need more frontline talent to make a legit playoff push, which is required to have a chance to keep AD. And even then, who knows. OKC was able to keep Durand, but the Cavs couldn't keep Lebron even with a NBA finals appearance.

Alright. Look. Admittedly, NBA free agency isn't my field. I'm a Saints fan, an LSU fan, and have been a Hornets fan, in that order, since they got here. Ever since then, I've watched them contend in the East with Baron, and then in the West with CP. Until Shinn and Byron started driving everything into the ground, I've followed some fairly decent years. When Cp3 left, it was a dark time. If the team keeps missing the playoffs, I don't see them being able to keep Davis. I don't know when he can leave. Whatever the soonest he can, if he's with a team that is doing this, it'll be then. I'd like that not to happen. I apologize for the misinformation, but I'm pretty sure he won't want to be on a team that keeps doing that.

What's the soonest he could leave if he wanted to? Or I guess, like when is the year before the last year he can begin to opt out? How many years do we have left to prove to him we'll be a contender?

Rookies typically play for 4 years before getting their 2nd contract. When the time comes for their 2nd contract they are RESTRICTED Free Agents, not Unrestricted Free Agents, that freedom doesn't come until their 3rd contract. In Anthony Davis' case he is going to get an extension offer like Derrick Rose and Blake Griffin got, around 5 years $95 million. He will happily sign that meaning it's not time to panic until he has about 2 years left on that deal. Basically the team has about 5 more years to get the team in place before it's time to start worrying. Teams have 9 total years of control, but if they screw it up things start falling apart around year 7.
if we aren't contending by then keeping AD is just one item on a long list of problems

If things go bad it'd probably follow the CP3 script and the "I didn't ask to be traded" trade demands would start in the 2019 offseason and you'd have on year of all in desperation and trade him in the 2020 offseason. So we have 5 years to get it right. The coach is the easiest part of the equation to get right, or at least the one that is quickest to change, the right coach can be hired in one season. The right roster can take multiple years to build. As much heat as is on Monty, Demps is the one that makes the most long term impact right now.

Now, as it turns out, the injury issues have continued (although not as much this season). And he doesn't have the explosiveness he once had. And, yeah, his contract sucks and he'll be hard to unload. But that one signing alone is not a fireable offense, imo.

Obviously, we disagree on several points, but I do commend you on your well thought out argument...even if it's wrong!

Interesting coincidence happened today regarding Monty (not Demps).

A neighbor of mine is pretty close to some of the Pels/Saints management and, as it happens, also knows some of Monty's neighbors in Old Metairie. From what I gather, Monty is sort of a weirdo, if not an outright prick, away from basketball.

This is rank hearsay from a couple of third parties and probably means nothing in the long run. But I thought I'd just stoke the fires a little bit.

Small town. True or false? He's complained about loud music (in fricking Old Metairie of all places).

Haven't heard anything about that, but some of the stories about him are pretty bad.

Couldn't help it.

I even changed my mind and tried to "press back" on the iPad and not submit, but it wouldn't go back. My post just stayed on the screen. So I had no choice but to send it.

What player worth his salt would want to come play for that goofball Williams?
