I am so sorry for your families loss.

I had the honor of doing my broadcast internship with Walter and Mike Rhodes before I began my career in Cable sports. He was the consummate broadcaster and I learned a lot from him.

Tell Ms Sue that I loved the times Walter would invite my wife and I into their home for New Years Days Bowl Game Parties.

I can still hear Walter saying in the news room, "Scruum if they can't take a joke.

Walter was the last of a generation that could besitifully paint a picture with words, a true artisan of his craft. We could use more Walter Hills today.

Love to you, Ms Sue and Michael.

RIP Walter Hill. Your rest is well earned.

When I was in the Navy in the late 60's I used to listen to LSU on WWL. In Norfolk, Va. WWL sounded like it was just down the road. Thanks to Walter and John for great memories and condolences to the Family of Walter Hill.

Loss of a great Tiger. So sorry to hear . I had inquired a couple of years ago how he was doing. Prayers to the family and all of Tiger Nation. Rest in Peace Mr. Hill. I always enjoyed listening to you and John Ferguson on the Tiger Radio and then when it was Mr. Hill, John Ferguson and Doug Moreau . What a tandem of radio announcers and fine gentlemen.

I've read the many wonderful things Tiger Fans have posted here about Walter Hill over the years.
I am Walter's daughter-in-law. If anyone would like to post a message to his widow and sons, I'll be sure they get it.

I really enjoyed watching him and listening to him. I enjoyed his interviews. I always thought LSU had the best broadcasting team anywhere with him and John Ferguson.

He will be missed!

My condolences. I actually feel sorry for the younger generation that will never get the experience of huddling around the AM radio with family, listening to Mr Hill and John Ferguson, hanging on every word.
As a 10 year old, I would replay their broadcasts in my mind as I replicated the game on the neutral ground in front of my house by myself at 11 pm on a Saturday night. I made the pass AND catch as time expired to beat Ole Miss in 72 with Mr Hill an Mr Ferguson's call ringing in my ears. Bert Jones and Brad Davis got all the credit though, lol. Many more of these memories are etched in my memory and the LSU Broadcasts of that time are the reason. Thank you, Hill family, for sharing him with us Tigers! God Bless y'all.

You nailed it. In the pre Internet days we had to rely on John & Walter to bring us the broadcasts of Tiger football. And they did it in an outstanding manner. They were the best.

Yea, LSU was only on TV a few times a year back then. I listened to a lot of broadcasts with my dad. I felt like I knew Walter Hill. Something about him. Sorry to hear this.

Walter was a big part of the glory days of WBRZ sports on tv and WJBO's LSU broadcasts.

Walter Hill is one of my favorite color analysts of all time. I don't know where Steve, (Walter's son), is today, but when I lived in Alexandria he sold advertising and he used to come to my dad's business located at 10th and Jackson. He and I had many great conversations about his dad. He was a great tiger fan and a great voice to hear on the radio. May he rest in peace. Blessings to the family.

Sorry for your family's loss. My dad has fond memories of listening to Walter Hill. Rest in peace.

Here is an Advocate article regarding Mr. Hill's passing

LINK

quote:

“It all started because he needed a spotter one day, and I was the only guy who could do it,” Hill told The Advocate in December 2005 after Ferguson’s death at age 85.

The tandem’s tenure started in 1961 after WJBO landed broadcast rights from WLCS. LSU broadcasts were also carried by WWL and Shreveport’s KWKH-AM, which both had strong enough signals to make sure night broadcasts carried well outside the South.

“The games were broadcast to the greater part of the country,” Johnson said. “You could hear a LSU game in the Midwest all the way to Chicago.”

That partly influenced the style adopted by Hill and Ferguson. Both were known for a no-frills approach, based largely on a professional style rooted in calmly reporting the action as it unfolded.

“The concept was to be more network than rah-rah in making calls,” Johnson said.

True professional who made a great team with John Ferguson. In the days before multiple TV networks and the internet Walter Hill and John Ferguson somehow transported you to Tiger Stadium where you were a part of the magic. You knew it was game time when you heard, "Hi everybody this is Walter Hill along with John Ferguson coming to you live from Tiger Stadium where tonight the LSU Fighting Tigers will take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a game Tiger fans have awaited for a whole year.....

Sorry to hear about Mr. Hill's passing.

quote:

Some of my fondest LSU memories were the John Ferguson / Walter Hill radio broadcasts of LSU games. Family huddled around an inexpensive radio on Saturday nights in the fall dreaming of what it would be like to be in Tiger stadium.

Describes so many of my Saturday nights as a kid & teen. Used to take the radio and tilt-it, turn-it, tune-it, etc to hear the Tigers with my dad.

John Ferguson and Walter Hill cemented themselves in the memories of so many of us old Tiger fans.
